Former Real Madrid coach Vicente Del Bosque has arguably the toughest decision on the planet over the next week as he’s forced to decide on Spain’s World Cup squad.
The current European and World champions boast an array of leading stars that they could probably field two sides at the World Cup that would both be contenders for the trophy.
Only 23 men can make the trip, however, and Premier League-based strikers Alvaro Negredo, Roberto Soldado and Fernando Torres are in direct competition with each other for the nod.
Manchester City’s Alvaro Negredo, dubbed ‘The Beast’, has enjoyed a solid debut season in England since making his big-money move from Seviila.
In 21 Premier League starts, the Man City man has notched nine goals and added a further three assists. However, his last goal for the Citizens was back in January and the recent form of Edin Dzeko has made it hard for him to nail down regular football ahead of this summer’s big tournament.
Tottenham Hotspur striker Roberto Soldado, on the other hand, has struggled at White Hart Lane since arriving from Valencia.
The 28-year-old has netted just nine goals for Spurs in all competitions all season, with the majority of those coming from the penalty spot.
For the £26m that Tottenham shelled out last summer, the North Londoners certainly expected more. It’s highly unlikely Soldado will make the squad, especially as Diego Costa plays a similar role.
The final Premier League striker in with a shout of making it is Chelsea striker Fernando Torres.
The Former Atletico Madrid has huge experience in the national squad, and his record of scoring in two consecutive European Championship finals means he will always have a place in the hearts of the Spanish public.
His form for the Blues this season, however, hasn’t been one of a striker breeding confidence. He has netted just four times in the Premier League this season, with his last league goal for Chelsea coming in January. If it comes down to a straight choice between him and David Villa, the latter would certainly be the favourite.
With the excitement of the official announcement just around the corner, the Spanish press AS have conducted a poll asking the Spanish public to vote for their preferred 23-man squad.
Diego Costa was an automatic choice with 5,440 votes. But of the remaining strikers, Fernando Llorente got the nod with 3,706 votes and Man City man Alvaro Negredo (3,764) was heavily favoured over Niño Torres (1,738) and Roberto Soldado who came last with just 266 votes.
