Rooney: Liverpool rival is 'a close second' to Cristiano Ronaldo

Luis Suarez Uruguay

Wayne Rooney has sung the praises of Liverpool striker Luis Suarez today.

Manchester United have had a pretty poor season - but it has not been bad for Wayne Rooney. He has been one of the less appalling players this campaign and received an excellent bonus to boot - his £300k-a-week contract eye watering in its magnitude.

While United have toiled their fiercest rivals Liverpool have prospered and look like missing out on the Premier League title approaching the finishing line - with Manchester City the clear favourites to lift the trophy now.

Of course much of that success has been down to one player - Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan striker, who Rooney will face at the World Cup this summer in Brazil, has been the pinpoint of most of their attacks this season - ever since returning from a ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic before the end of last season.

Suarez has bagged a whopping 31 goals in 36 appearances for the club this summer and is the Premier League’s top goalscorer. Add to this his award as the PFA Player of the Year and it has certainly not been a bad season for the former Ajax star.

And it looks like the United man would have voted for the Liverpool player - despite obvious rivalry.

Rooney, along with the likes of Chelsea players Oscar and Victor Moses is part of the Samsung Football line-up ahead of this summer’s World Cup - and as part of his PR duties he was involved in a live Q&A with fans on their official Facebook page this afternoon.

And one of the questions addressed who he thought was the best player in the world - the answer of which was always going to be his old friend Cristiano Ronaldo.

"Who do you feel is the best player in the world right now?"

"Cristiano Ronaldo and probably Luis Suarez a close second."

But Suarez was a ‘close second’ according to Rooney.

I think I speak for Wayne and the nation when we agree on his excellence - but how we also hope he has a bad month this summer.
