On this day: Rival boss slams Szczesny, Giroud on Bayern and Luiz smile

Giroud Warm Up

On the 7th May 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Manchester United.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 7th May 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 7th May 2013…

Life of Bayern

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud was speaking about a failed move to Bayern Munich. The former Montpellier forward had been banging in the goals in France before his move to Arsenal - which could easily have been Bayern.

But they signed Mario Mandzukic instead. Giroud stated:

“My agent spoke to them and it was approved by people at Bayern. But they wanted to wait for the Euros and Mandzukic had a great Euros. To be pursued by Bayern, it is good.”

The French international has gone on to become Arsenal’s biggest goal threat in the past two seasons - and would be facing losing his place to Robert Lewandowski if he did join Bayern two seasons.

Wojc your mouth

Wojciech Szczesny has an interesting relationship with the Tottenham Hotspur fans - who he seems to constantly rub up the wrong way.

And it was a case of enough is enough a year ago today for Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas.

AVB responded to claims by Szczesny that Tottenham "do not have enough quality” to finish in the Champions League places by stating:

"I think it would be a little bit more tolerable if it came from a genuine Arsenal fan. Coming from an Arsenal player who is only passing through to another club and isn't going to stay there for life, he doesn't mean those words from the heart. We don't expect any love from an Arsenal player to a Tottenham. A little lack of respect is normal in a rivalry."

Brazil barmy

David Luiz was talking about his smile at Manchester United fans amid a controversy with Brazilian compatriot Rafael.

United fans felt Luiz over-reacted to the incident - which saw Rafael sent off.

But he says his cheeky smile, done whilst still on the floor, was in response to United fans who were taunting him - by comparing him to Simpsons character Sideshow Bob.
