Former Chelsea star: 'United would be lucky to have van Gaal!'

Bayern Munich and Netherlands attacker Arjen Robben has given his backing for the prospective Manchester United marriage with Louis van Gaal.

Bayern Munich forward Arjen Robben believes that Louis van Gaal would represent an exemplary successor for David Moyes as Manchester United's new managerial incumbent.

Currently, Ryan Giggs is three games into his tenure as interim player-manager, yet, according to newspaper consensus, it is a matter of when rather than if, he makes way for Netherlands coaching great van Gaal.

Giggs would not have his contract terminated, though, but return to his previous role as assistant manager, effectively keeping the dugout warm for a full-time boss.

Robben, 30, a star performer for Bayern this season, has completed 80 dribbles, created 46 chances, has scored 11 goals and provided six assists, however, he was not always one of the first-names on the team-sheet at the Allianz Arena in previous campaigns but, regardless, Netherlands national manager van Gaal always had faith in him.

"I owe Van Gaal a lot - he really helped me as a player," said Robben, as quoted by the Daily Mail.

"I was not always playing for Bayern - but still he continued to pick me for the national team. That faith he showed in me helped me as a player - and then I went on to play some of the best football of my career for Bayern.

"I was not a special case - he shows faith in all of his players - and that is one of the reasons why players want to play for him - and why they like to play for him."

There have long been rumours of dressing-room dissatisfaction at Old Trafford, yet Robben believes van Gaal is the man to resolve any of these issues.

"There is something about going into a Van Gaal dressing room and training sessions - there is a positive vibe and a warmth to the place."

Concluding, he the wing veteran remarked: "He creates a special environment for his players - and Manchester United will be very fortunate to have him as their coach."
