Ex-Arsenal & Tottenham star still waiting for apology

Sol Campbell says that he has yet to receive an apology from Sven-Goran Eriksson for his role in the defender’s move to Notts County.

Sol Campbell has said that he is still waiting for an apology from Sven-Goran Eriksson for convincing him to join Notts County in 2009.

The former England international moved to the Nottingham-based club in August of that year on a five-year deal after leaving Portsmouth. It was said to be his biggest contract and he was going to be paid more than what he got during his best years at Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.

Eriksson was key in convincing Campbell to join the League Two club, having worked with the 39-year-old during his time as the Three Lions boss. Big things were promised, as Munto Finance, a Middle Eastern consortium owned by Qadbak Investments, had just bought the club and had promised investments.

However, everything soon started to unravel and Campbell realised in a short period of time that the plans of the club were not going to come to fruition. After playing for the Magpies in just one match, he asked to be released from his contract.

The club’s owners agreed, and Campbell rejoined Arsenal in January 2010. Eriksson, who had been appointed as County’s director of football, resigned from his position in February 2010 and a month later was named the manager of the Ivory Coast national team.

Campbell regrets that he ever made the move to County, and that he was gullible enough to be lured by false promises. However, the defender insists that he has yet to receive an apology from Eriksson for his role in the transfer.

‘It was my biggest contract, and it was for five years – that’s when I should have woken up!’ he told FourFourTwo. ‘I just started getting phone calls from ex-FA people, some business people, who had heard rumours about the owners. And that, along with my intuition, raised concerns... No, Sven still hasn’t said sorry for getting me involved. All he’s got to do is say sorry’.
