Adam Lallana has hinted that he intends to remain at Southampton next season despite the increased speculation that both Liverpool and Manchester United are interested in him.
“I’ve been here since I was 12 and I want to keep progressing with the club.”
And in light of the skipper’s comments, could another Southampton star follow in committing himself to the club at which he made his name?
Luke Shaw is being tipped for a £30million summer exit, with Chelsea and United the most regularly linked. But at just 18, what is the rush?
Southampton have shown that they are willing to give youth a chance, and it has proved to be an emphatic success, not just this season but in a past that has seen the likes of Theo Walcott, Gareth Bale and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all blossom on the south coast.
And when you consider the time it took for the first two players in particular to replicate their Saints’ form at Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur respectively, Shaw may be wise to continue learning under Mauricio Pochettino for a little longer.
Something exciting is happening at St Mary’s right now, and players such as Shaw and Lallana have shown you can push for a World Cup place despite not playing for one of the much-heralded ‘big boys’.
Given the latter’s apparent commitment to Pochettino’s side, what chance Shaw following suit? After all, he is a teenage Premier League regular on the verge of a trip to Brazil and not many people can say that.
