Reported Manchester City target Eliaquim Mangala is on the radar of Atletico Madrid according to a report in Spain.
The FC Porto centre-back was heavily linked with a last-minute move to the Etihad Stadium during the January transfer window. But despite talk of multi-million-pound offers and the chartering of private jets, both Mangala and his teammate Fernando stayed exactly where they were.
It was heavily reported that City would try again this summer, as they sought the defensive reinforcements who would help them become as formidable a force in Europe as they are in the Premier League.
With Martin Demichelis seemingly not the answer, Joleon Lescott on his way and Matija Nastasic regularly injured, Manuel Pellegrini needs a strong and reliable defender to partner Vincent Kompany, and Mangala fits the bill.
Miranda has made 49 appearances for Diego Simeone’s team this season and to lose him would be a hefty blow. And yet replacing him with Mangala would be a master-stroke – if a costly one.
The Porto player has a reported release-clause of £42million, although it has since been claimed that the Portuguese side would be prepared to do business for considerably less than that.
Either way, it seems that if City do want Mangala they could be faced with some very enticing competition.
After all, the way it is looking, Atleti could end the season with a La Liga and Champions League double.
