Arsenal believe that Bacary Sagna may join a Premier League rival this summer. The French right-back is out of contract this summer and his reluctance to agree a move to a continental club has fuelled rumours he will be joining a domestic rival - with Chelsea and Manchester City linked.
Sagna waved goodbye to fans after the final Emirates game against West Brom on Sunday.
He told French TV that the Belgian was a major target but finances prevented it:
"Yes, I wanted to take him, I had his agent at my home but again the barrier was financial and Chelsea made an effort that I couldn't make. He can be one of the players who grows into the Messi, Ronaldo stature if he continues to develop well."
Wenger also spoke about a potential future in the German Bundesliga. The Frenchman stated:
"If I were to go somewhere then I think it would be in a different country because I am so much Arsenal that I would not like to coach anywhere else in England. Germany [is an option] because I am of German culture a little bit and it's a country where I have never worked and I am very close to it."
Arsenal are said to be looking into the possibility of signing Bayern Munich star Javi Martinez. The Spanish international is being linked with an exit from the Bundesliga champions as his first-team football opportunities have diminished.
He would be a an excellent alternative to Lars Bender - who rejected any opportunity of leaving Bayer Leverkusen yesterday.
The Swiss international is said to be staying in Germany after reportedly agreeing a deal with Bayer Leverkusen.
However this report has emerged before and it was later brushed off as ‘nonsense’.
