Yesterday EA announced the latest in their line of NHL games, aptly named, NHL 15. What the title lacks in pizazz, the game promises to make up for in new features for the next-gen consoles. Some of which include ‘real puck physics’ and ‘unprecedented player likeness’ which uses the same tech used in EA Sports UFC.
Harnessing the power of the Xbox One and Playstation 4, EA Sports have been able to introduce real-world physics to each of the players on the ice, meaning that those desperate scrambles around the net, and player pileups, will be even more realistic than before. The puck has been given a physics-boost too, reacting to the ice with ‘authentic puck spins, rolls and bounces’ say EA.
In conjunction with player likeness tech, NHL’s player models are also made up of three layers: the body, equipment, and jersey. All of the layers act separately, alongside the ‘Dynamic Cloth’ technology, which, as EA say, ‘adds an extra layer of realism.’
The skill stick control system has been improved, offering an easy to use control scheme 'packed with depth.' And the game also introduces ‘vision AI’, which is an enhanced player intelligence. It allows the AI to read the game better, and react to what is happening, anticipating passes and breakouts.
A new partnership with NBC Sports brings over 35,000 lines of commentary that have been crammed into NHL 15 from NBC Sports commentators Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick and Eddie Olczyk, with games insights provided by TSN analyst Ray Ferraro. Similarly to the Vision AI that the players on the ice have, the commentators will react to the game, just like in real life. Not only that, but to immerse you in the authentic NHL experience there will be full game intros akin to what is seen on TV.
The arenas have also been given a boost, with over 9,000 crowd models used with four times the animations seen previously. The crowd will react to the game in different ways, such as taunting players, clapping to the Jumbotron’s music and even taking selfies.

NHL 15 is due out some time this Autumn for Playstation 3, Playastation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
