Stars who began their relationship after working on spy thriller a decade ago set to team up on new movie written by Jolie

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are jointly developing a new movie project, based on a script written by Jolie. At this stage it remains unclear whether Pitt will serve as producer or star; likewise, whether Jolie will feature on screen or just behind the camera. The plot, too, remains mysterious.

Pitt's work as a producer on 12 Years a Slave won him a best picture Oscar earlier this year; he also made a brief acting appearance in Steve McQueen's drama. Jolie – shortly to be seen in fairy-tale revamp Maleficent – directed and produced second world war survival drama Unbroken, which opens at Christmas. That film stars British actor Jack O'Connell as US war hero Lou Zamperini, who was stranded at sea for many weeks. The Coen brothers wrote the script, adapted from a non-fiction book by Laura Hillenbrand.

Pitt also has a war drama opening this winter: Fury, the David Ayer film that shot in Oxfordshire last year.

Also in the pipeline for Jolie are a couple of sequels – Kung Fu Panda 3 and Salt 2 – plus the starring role in a new Cleopatra film, and producer duties on a movie about the relationship between Churchill and Roosevelt. The movie site IMDb lists Pitt as attached to 33 other forthcoming films, as well as the one with Jolie – mostly as a producer with his Plan B outfit.

The couple, who have six children, have only ever worked on one film together: Mr and Mrs Smith (2005), which met with lukewarm reviews but made more than $500m (£296m) worldwide.
