Real Madrid failed to fully take advantage of Barcelona’s 2-2 draw with Getafe and Atletico Madrid’s shock 2-0 loss at Levante by dropping points in a 2-2 home draw with Valencia.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men knew they had the chance to put huge pressure on their rivals at the top of La Liga, but the Santiago Bernabeu was shocked to see such an out-of-sorts performance late on Sunday evening.
As the minutes were winding down and the hosts 2-1 behind, tensions were starting to build between the Real Madrid players.
Arsenal target Alvaro Morata replaced Karim Benzema with seven minutes remaining and soon became involved on one of the game’s most intriguing talking points.
The Spanish U21 goal-scorer picked the ball and drove at the Valencia backline with space opening up. Ronaldo was free to his left, but instead, Morata opted to shoot, a decision he would soon regret.
As the ball flew over the crossbar, Cristiano Ronaldo turned around and hurled a torrent of abuse at the young star. Despite walking away, the former Man United star wasn’t finished as he took two intolerable glances towards the Spaniard, disgusted as he didn’t receive the pass.
Luckily for the potential future Arsenal star, Ronaldo pulled Real Madrid level in the 92nd minute and rescued a point with a majestic backheel.
As for Morata, it’s a moment he won’t forget in a hurry, and one which could stand him in good stead should he make the challenging move to the Premier League this summer.
The Gunners have had a long-standing interest in the 21-year-old, with one report even suggesting there was a possible agreement to bring him to the Emirates this summer.
Those reports were never confirmed, however, and if Arsene Wenger feels he is the man to partner Olivier Giroud in Arsenal's front-line, then he may have to make his move sharpish amid speculation of interest from a number of Serie A clubs.
