The Daily Mail has suggested that PSG are still interested in Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

A report in the Daily Mail has suggested that Paris Saint-Germain decided they wanted to sign Wayne Rooney from Manchester United last winter.

Former boss David Moyes did great work getting the England international committed to a new deal at Old Trafford, but according to the national daily, PSG haven’t given up on their initial hope of landing the striker.

“The ambitious French club were poised to make a move for Rooney in January but United decided to meet his pay demands. It is believed the player is reluctant to leave the Premier League but a move to PSG may prove his best option if he is no longer central to Van Gaal’s plans,” writes Rob Shepherd.

With Louis van Gaal the favourite to be appointed manager at Old Trafford, there is speculation that Rooney could be on the receiving end of some basic decision making by the Dutchman as soon as he walks into his Old Trafford office.

Should LvG be appointed United boss following the World Cup, reports suggest he will make Robin Van Persie captain and also use the Dutch striker as his main centre forward.

That idea seems to be based on the positive working relationship the pair currently enjoy within the Netherlands international setup.

Rooney’s motives for signing that bumper £300,000 per week contract earlier this season have been widely debated but other than the cash, Moyes is likely to have told the striker he wanted him to be his main man as he looked to make up for a miserable first season in charge.

Van Gaal has a fearsome reputation within the European game and there have been suggestions he will divide the United dressing room with his arrogant and up front nature.

Maybe that’s what United need but should Rooney be nudged down the pecking order when he signed a deal based on promises from another manager, a deal may just be possible.

There is so much that needs to happen before Rooney leaves for a club like PSG and Rooney is certainly unlikely to jump ship should he be going to a side which already uses Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani up front.

The Daily Mail is very clear in suggesting PSG have a vested interest in Rooney but whether he’s ready to turn his back on United should they appoint an extremely experienced and successful coach is doubtful.
