Catalan based newspaper Sport has suggested that Barcelona are ready to offload four younger players this summer.
Ibrahim Afellay, Isaac Cuenca, Jonathan Dos Santos and Oier Olazabal are the names in question according to Sport’s report and Arsene Wenger and Brendan Rodgers could be set to take advantage.
“These are players who have only had a few minutes this season, in the case of Cuenca and Oier they have not even played a minute so it is clear their futures are far from the Catalan club,” reads Sport’s report.
Arsenal have been strongly linked with Afellay in the past and there is a clear need for him in Arsene Wenger’s current first team squad.
He can play down either side of the midfield as a winger and can also play up front in behind the main striker.
Not only could he provide striker support for Arsenal, he could consolidate down one side of their midfield, which has the potential to release players like Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott to focus on centre forward roles.
Cuenca, strongly linked with Liverpool, could have a similar impact at Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers.
One of the areas Rodgers will be looking to address this summer is left midfield.
Victor Moses hasn’t done enough on loan from Chelsea to warrant a permanent transfer while Luis Alberto has only been on the fringes of the first team squad throughout the current season.
Their inconsistency has forced Rodgers into using a combination of centrally stronger players on the left with Philippe Coutinho, Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge having all played down that side so far this season.
Dos Santos is another player who has been linked with Liverpool in the past but his signing would be a gamble for Rodgers as he hasn’t got a great deal of first team experience, despite the fact he’s 24-years-old.
There was always going to be a clearout at Barca following a disappointing season for Tata Martino, with Arsenal and Liverpool set to benefit if these youngsters make way.
