Chelsea latest: Talks ‘ongoing’ but defender set to leave; Mourinho wants ‘killer instinct’ striker

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from Stamford Bridge…

It appears increasingly likely that Ashley Cole will be leaving Chelsea this summer, following the tears he shed after the club’s last home game of the season against Norwich City.

The Express claims that while talks between the club and the player regarding a new contract are “ongoing”, it appears likely the England international will look for a new challenge this summer.

Cole has impressed since forcing his way back into the side in recent weeks, but it looks like the Stamford Bridge faithful may have seen the last of one of the old-guard.

In other news, Jose Mourinho has revealed that Chelsea need a striker with a “killer instinct”.

In an interview with Chelsea TV that was later published by ESPN, the Blues boss said, “We have to try to win as a team, to improve as a team, but also add the attacking player with that killer instinct and the number of goals that push teams to different levels.”

Chelsea again failed to find the net against the Canairies despite having a number of good chances, and their lack of a world-class front-man is thought, by many, to be the reason they have failed to dominate both domestically and in Europe this season.

The players they have got can get them so far, but without a quality goal-getter, they will more often than not fall at the final hurdle.

Mourinho understands that, so expect him to spend big this summer to rectify that particular problem.
