Prior to David Moyes Old Trafford departure, he hinted that starlet James Wilson could make his debut before the end of the campaign.
There had been few bright sparks for the deposed champions, but it suddenly looked as though Adnan Januzaj could find another young player competing with him for the tag of United’s ‘next-big-thing’.
“I think he’s got a good chance, the boy, and we want to keep him right but keep moving him up and progressing him when we think the opportunities are there,” Moyes told MUTV.
That was after Wilson had found his way onto the bench for United’s league game against Newcastle United; a match Moyes hinted he could have played a part in were it not for injuries to some of his starters that day.
But since Moyes’ departure, Wilson has not been included in either of Ryan Giggs’ squads; which is no surprise given the Welshman’s desire to pick his strongest available side whenever possible.
And yet as the end of a disappointing campaign approaches, now is exactly the time to give a player like Wilson a chance in the first-team.
He has always played above his level, and excelled in the process. He is not another flash-in-the-pan. Wilson is an outstanding finisher who is capable of ultimately succeeding at United.
At just 18, there is plenty of time for him to show the Old Trafford faithful – and his future boss –what he can do. But you just wonder if Moyes would have blooded the player sooner, as he did with Januzaj. And we all know what happened there…
