How Modric snub could pave the way for Chelsea to sign Isco

Chelsea could target another Real Madrid star after being told Luka Modric is not an option.

Real Madrid have given Chelsea clear message; hands off Luka Modric.

Jose Mourinho’s side have been strongly linked with a move for the Croatian midfielder but Carlo Ancelotti’s club have said he won’t be going anywhere after the World Cup this summer.

“Modric would be Mourinho’s first choice to improve his midfield in the summer and Roman Abramovich is also a massive fan - but it’s been made very clear that this one is going nowhere,” a source told Goal.com.

However, this is a situation which could work in Chelsea’s favour in relation to their reported interested in another midfielder; Isco.

Marca has suggested that Asier Illarramendi is the favoured option for Ancelotti as he mulls over who to replace the suspended Xabi Alonso with ahead of the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.

The Spanish newspaper had previously tipped Isco to fill in for Alonso, but news seems to have emerged that the 22-year-old will now be overlooked.

“Asier Illarramendi already knows there is a good chance he will be a starter in the final of the Champions League against Atlético Madrid. Carlo Ancelotti has admitted he is the obvious replacement for Xabi Alonso,” writes Marca.

Isco’s chances of leaving the Bernabeu this summer are increased by the fact Modric is unlikely to go anywhere.

Isco started this season with a bang but has since been replaced in the first team as Modric’s consistency told and Alonso returned to full fitness.

Isco is a player who could realistically fit into the Chelsea squad with a gap at number ten following the sale of Juan Mata to Manchester United.

There is also a lot of speculation suggesting Ligue One giants PSG are still interested in signing Oscar this summer, which would leave Mourinho hunting for a top class middle man to play at the top of his midfield.

Isco ticks a lot of boxes in terms of what Mourinho will be looking for so stubbornness over Modric may not be such a bad thing if Mourinho has had one eye on the Spaniard this season.
