But he was fortunate as his team-mates bailed him out in a 3-2 win for Almeria v Real Betis.
But he has turned from hero to zero in just a week.
Almeria are in it thick down the bottom of Spanish football’s crème de la crème and needed a result in the game against the already relegated Real Betis at home in what was supposed to be one of the easier games they have left this campaign.
But despite going 1-0 up after 52 minutes things quickly took a turn - when Suso was sent off.
The attacking midfielder flew into a challenge on Betis’ Polish defender Damien Perquis and less than 20 minutes later Betis had turned the game on its head - goals from Braian Rodriguez and Salva Sevilla making it 2-1.
Suso’s late challenge on Perquis was not great, but the red card might have been harsh, and it seemed as though this rash decision was about to put a dampener on his time at the club and the defeat would have left them essentially one defeat away from relegation back to Segunda Liga.
But thankfully for Suso his boys had his back!
A goal from Alex Vidal levelled things up in the 77th minute before Ramon Azeez won them the game with a 94th minute strike to send Almeria out of the bottom three.
