Good news Chelsea and Liverpool - 'New Ozil' target scores but bottom three finish confirmed

Hamburg SV face a massive game against Mainz next weekend in their battle for survival.

This week saw Chelsea linked with a move for Hamburg SV playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu - and they are not the only team said to be watching a player dubbed the ‘new Ozil’.

The Turkish international was once heavily linked with Arsenal, but it seems Liverpool are now the favourites to battle Chelsea for his signature. Brendan Rodgers reportedly checked him out in action last month as a potential reinforcement for a debut Champions League campaign - and he would have been impressed with his goal yesterday.

Calhanoglu scored HSV’s only goal in a 4-1 defeat against Bayern Munich - but it was a lovely strike, evading challenge after challenge before smashing in from the edge of the box.

However the defeat is the telling story in regards to Liverpool and Chelsea.

Calhanoglu only signed a new deal at the club recently - and will not be forcing a move away from his beloved club unless they are relegated.

And the defeat yesterday confirmed that they will finish in the bottom three of the Bundesliga.

In the Bundesliga only the bottom two are automatically relegated - with third from bottom playing in a relegation play-off versus the team in third place in the 2.Bundesliga.

At the moment HSV are in that position - but Eintracht Braunschweig and FC Nurnberg are just two and one point behind them respectively - and if they better Hamburg’s result in the final game of the season next weekend Hamburg are relegated for the first time in their history.

With their financial troubles Hamburg will need to sell and Calhanoglu is one of the players who will definitely depart.

They take on seventh placed Mainz away next weekend while Braunschweig have a trip to Hoffenheim and Nurnberg are also on the road to Schalke 04.

And if either Premier League side want the ‘next Ozil’ they should support Mainz next Saturday.
