Manchester United are definitely a club in turmoil - as the expected struggles after Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure have surpassed even the gloomiest of predictors.
David Moyes was sacked last month after failing to deliver - and yesterday Ryan Giggs got a first-hand view of how bad United’s players can be.
It is going to be a summer of change at the club - with the likes of Patrice Evra, Ashley Young and Nani all set to depart - and still question marks over who will take over the managerial hotseat in the long run.
And of course they are also losing their club captain.
After eight years at the club Serbian defender Nemanja Vidic is leaving for Italy - after agreeing a deal to join Inter Milan on a free transfer in the summer.
Yesterday was therefore Vidic’s final game at Old Trafford and he would have enjoyed a win on his final outing in front of his beloved fans.
But unfortunately Sunderland had other ideas - with a goal from Seb Larsson enough for a Black Cats victory.
And Giggs was clearly upset at not being able to give Vidic the Old Trafford send-off he deserved.
He spoke about his captain after the game and made it clear just how highly rated Vidic is at the club:
“It is the last home game and obviously you want a positive result. Vida has been a brilliant player over the years, he is probably the greatest defender I have ever played with and I have played with some good ones. He is right up there, he is a brilliant player and obviously he will be sorely missed.”
Coming from Giggs - who has played with the likes of Jaap Stam, Steve Bruce, Rio Ferdinand and Gary Pallister - that is high praise indeed, and United will find it very hard to replace their departing legend.
