Van Gaal is still the bookmakers favourite to take the job at Old Trafford after United sacked David Moyes almost two weeks ago, but whilst there is no deal between the Dutchman and the Red Devils so far, the 62-year-old is still firmly expected to take the job this summer.
That means that the former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager will be handed a huge transfer kitty to work with as United need to conduct a full scale overhaul of their squad, and that means that van Gaal will be able to bring in a number of players as well as ship some out.
One of the players now linked with a move to United is winger Robben, formerly of Chelsea. The 30-year-old has worked with van Gaal at both Bayern Munich and with the Dutch national team, making him a firm favourite of van Gaal's.
With the shock rumour breaking this morning, here are three questions surrounding United's alleged pursuit of the flying Dutchman.
Does this spell the end for United's current wingers?
United's current crop of wingers have been underwhelming for some time. Nani is expected to leave this summer, whilst Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young could also be sold after inconsistent displays over the last couple of seasons. Robben, whilst now 30, would offer far more to the United team than the aforementioned wide men, even if it would be for a limited time.
How much would it cost to lure Robben to Old Trafford?
Robben moved to the Allianz Arena for €25m back in 2009, which is now around £20m. Bayern will be looking to recoup a large amount of that fee, but having just seen Robben turn 30 in January, they may have to lower that slightly. A bid in the region of £15m may be enough to make the Bundesliga club contemplate selling Robben, particularly with Xherdan Shaqiri waiting in the wings.
Is Robben exactly what United need right now?
Whilst the emergence of Adnan Januzaj and the £37m capture of Juan Mata can be seen as huge positives for United, they have been in dire need of some pace out wide this season. There has been little direct penetration from the Red Devils, and that's exactly what Robben offers. Some may be put off by his age, but there is little doubt that Robben is a danger on the flanks - and that's perfect for United.
Here are some reactions from United fans on Twitter after hearing the rumours about Robben's potential arrival at Old Trafford...
Robben is a great player !!! He'll be welcomed in any team!! Specially the sort of wingers we have #MUFC— arjun kapoor (@arjun1617) May 4, 2014
Would love to see Robben at United. That's more like the calibre of winger we should have, not Nani, Young, and Valencia. #mufc— Billy Joseph Rock (@BillyJosephRock) May 4, 2014
Robben will be a fanstastic signing. I don't mind Rooney going. Robben + Van Persey + Strootman will improve team chemistry #MUFC— Nn@md!™ (@N_4_Nnamdi) May 4, 2014
