Following FIFA’s decision to momentarily uphold Barcelona’s transfer embargo, a number of a top players have been linked with a move to the Nou Camp in the Spanish press.
The Catalans have been heavily linked with Chelsea defender David Luiz for the best part of 18 months, with Barcelona identifying the Brazilian as an ideal replacement for the retiring Carles Puyol.
So far, however, the Blues have been clear in their intentions of holding on to the former Benfica star.
Another man recently linked with Barcelona is Liverpool defender Daniel Agger.
Whilst on the pitch, Agger has fitted in well with Liverpool’s passing philosophy and it is perhaps his ability to play the ball out from the back which has attracted the Spanish giants.
Ultimately, Barcelona may just see the defender as a cheaper alternative to David Luiz, and Agger’s 6ft 3inch frame would certainly come to use in helping the Catalans overcome their flimsiness when defending set-pieces.
After a week’s worth of speculation, the Spanish press Diario Sport published an online poll asking Barcelona fans which defender they want the club to sign – the options being David Luiz, Daniel Agger and Athletic Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte.
From more than 7,000 participants, a whopping 70% opted for Chelsea's David Luiz whilst only 3% voted for Liverpool’s Daniel Agger.
Despite his obvious ability, 27-year-old David Luiz has only made 15 Premier League starts this season, with Jose Mourinho favouring John Terry and Gary Cahill in Chelsea’s backline.
The Brazilian has been used as a defensive midfielder on occasions, but with Nemanja Matic and Ramires the expected midfield partnership, David Luiz may push for a move to Barcelona this summer citing a need for guaranteed playing time.
