PHOTO: Sir Alex sums up Man United’s season

Former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was caught appearing to doze off during United’s 1-0 home defeat to Sunderland.

Another Saturday afternoon at Old Trafford, another disappointing outcome.

Manchester United slipped to their seventh Premier League defeat at home to a struggling Sunderland side as the Red Devils were downed by Guy Poyet’s men 1-0.

The hosts started brightly enough, with Juan Mata playing in his favoured number 10 role behind Mexican striker Javier Chicharito and Ashley Young and Nani accompanying them on either wing.

After early pressure and a lot of possession, Man United fell behind as Connor Wickham was allowed to squeeze a cross in from the flank and Swedish international Seb Larsson was on hand to impressively beat David de Gea in the United net with a clean finish.

Despite their best efforts, Man United – in Ryan Giggs’ second match in charge as interim boss – failed to break down Sunderland in the second half and there was a distinct lack of urgency late in the game.

It was typical of the Red Devils’ season as a whole, with flurries of good play and sustained possession undone by a lack of creativity and perseverance in the final third coupled with defensive lapses at the back.

This season’s side is anything but the powerful, direct and willing Manchester United of years gone by under Sir Alex Ferguson. And with the 72-year-old in regular attendance watching on, it seems this season has taken its toll on the United great as it appears he was snapped dozing off to the sound of crickets around Old Trafford stadium.

With just two games remaining and six points behind Spurs in sixth, it's almost say to say that sixth spot – and the Europa League qualification consolation prize – is now no longer an option.
