£20m Arsenal target in World Cup battle with his identical twin

Lars Bender

Lars Bender or Sven Bender? Who does Jogi Loew take to Brazil?

Bothers have played at the World Cup before, in fact brothers have played against each other at the World Cup in the past, and this summer there is a real chance that identical twins could play together in Brazil.

Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund holding midfielder’s Lars and Sven Bender have both played for their country in the past - and both could be on the plane to Brazil.

Of course Lars Bender will be well known to Arsenal fans. He is reportedly the number one target for The Gunners this season - as Arsene Wenger looks to bring in a long term replacement for Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini.

But his twin brother Sven looks ready to take him all the way for selection.

The pair have competition in the shape of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Toni Kroos, Roman Neustadter, Stefan Reinartz - although the latter two should not present too much competition.

However, Sami Khedira throws a fly in the ointment.

The Real Madrid man is back in action after his knee injury - and it is likely with his return to fitness that only one Bender twin will travel to Brazil.

But which one?

Lars has more caps and Sven has been out injured since February - so the Arsenal target will surely be the favourite to get the nod from Jogi Loew.

Sven however is ready to give it his all.

He told Kicker magazine:

"Of course I will do anything, do everything that is possible to be in the World Cup. I have to wait and see how my body responds to more intensive training.”

An interesting little battle then for Arsenal’s top summer target.
