Report: Milan give up on Krul, turn to £10m 'keeper

Tim Krul

AC Milan will end their pursuit of Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul and move for Federico Marchetti, Swiss reports suggest.

It may not have been the best of seasons for Newcastle United but goalkeeper Tim Krul has been outstanding and has been on AC Milan's radar for months.

The Dutch 'keeper has also reportedly been eyed by Barcelona after coping admirably behind an often leaky Newcastle defence.

Milan will need to find a long-term solution to their goalkeeper situation this summer as they continue to rely on the ageing and inconsistent Christian Abbiati.

There were rumours in January that Milan would move for Krul, but nothing materialised and it is now being reported that the Rossoneri have found a new target.

Swiss site Fusball.ch says that Milan are plotting a £10.6m swoop for Lazio goalkeeper Federico Marchetti and talks are already in progress with Biancocelesti chief Claudio Lotito.

The report states that the deal is almost complete and the only thing missing is the approval of Marchetti, who is waiting until the end of the season to make a decision.

Lazio owner Lotito has already become unpopular with fans for selling off key assets and there were protests after talented midfielder Hernanes was sold to Inter in January, so the sale of Marchetti could be controversial.

Marchetti is 31 and has 11 Italy caps to his name, most notably filling in for an injured Gigi Buffon during the 2010 World Cup.
