Manchester City are confident of completing a deal to bring Porto’s Brazilian midfielder Fernando to the Etihad this summer, according to The Mirror.

Fernando was a reported target of City in January, but no deal could be agreed between the two clubs before the deadline.

However, the Manchester-based outfit are now hoping to rekindle their interest in the summer and will activate the clause in his contract, which means that he will be available for £20 million.

If the 26-year-old is to sign, then he will add further competition to City’s midfield ranks, which are already packed with quality. Manager Manuel Pellegrini already has the likes of Fernandinho, Yaya Toure, Javi Garcia, Jack Rodwell and James Milner to select in his central-midfield spots, but he is thought to be keen to have even more options to choose from in his squad.

Fernando has been at Porto since 2007 and has made 138 league appearances for the Portuguese giants, scoring twice in the process. He has made a name for himself through his tireless and powerful displays in the heart of midfield.

City are also said to be interested in Fernando’s teammate, Eliaquim Mangala. The centre-back has established a reputation as one of the finest players in his position across Europe, but he is likely to cost slightly more than his sought-after teammate.

If the pair do sign, then it could spell the end for players such as Rodwell and Micah Richards, with their first-team chances already limited.

If the duo are to be up for sale, then there is likely to be no shortage of suitors. It may well benefit the England national side, too, as they will see two of their better prospects receive more opportunities to impress.
