Ex-Liverpool midfielder: Pellegrini should be sacked if City don't win title

Danny Murphy believes that the Etihad Stadium outfit will relieve the Chilean boss of his responsibilities if the title is not sealed.

Manchester City have the emphasis to win the Premier League title after Chelsea’s victory at Liverpool last Sunday, with the Etihad Stadium outfit assured of top spot if they win their remaining games.

Ahead of their crunch clash with Everton this weekend, Danny Murphy has stated that the pressure is truly on Manuel Pellegrini.

The ex-Liverpool midfielder revealed that he felt the Chilean would be dismissed if City do not lift the trophy this term.

“He’s been handed a second chance this season to win the title and, if he throws it away again, there will be big question marks asked about his leadership and his managerial qualities,” he told talkSPORT.

“They have only won the League Cup and they had it [the Premier League title] in their own hands a few a weeks ago. With the squad he has got and the money he has spent, if he loses to Everton and then loses the title, it’s nail in his coffin.

“Now they have been given a second chance with three games to go. If he can’t motivate them players to win those three games then I’m asking some serious questions.”

Liverpool have the potential to finish on the same points as City, but the Manchester club have a superior goal difference.

Pellegrini took over from Roberto Mancini in the summer and has already landed the Capital One Cup this season.
