Cleverley: Scholes wondergoal is 'when I really fell in love with United'

Tom Cleverley 2

Tom Cleverley has been speaking about his time at Manchester United - and when he became a United fan.

It has been a tough season for Tom Cleverley. The Manchester United midfielder seemed to have it all in the palm of his hands 18 months or so ago.

He was a regular in the England and United set-up and considered the natural successor to Paul Scholes.

However he has not progressed since and has been consistently criticised by the United faithful for his lack of penetration, pace and tackling ability.

However these were never traits he was ever expected to possess.

He is all about his technical ability, passing ability and close control - but all of those factors have also been lacking this season.

But it was these original features that saw him once compared to the great Paul Scholes - and now he has revealed how it was Scholsey who made him fall in love with Manchester United in the first place.

Speaking to United Uncovered Cleverley, who grew up in Bradford, has revealed how as a 10-year-old he watched on as Scholes scored that marvellous volley against The Bantams at Valley Parade in March 2000 - and how it changed his allegiance to United:

“I grew up as a Bradford City fan and went to watch them for a couple of years. I saw Bradford play United at Valley Parade. United won 4-0, with Paul Scholes scoring that volley from David Beckham's corner. That goal, and seeing the away fans and the way they supported the team, that is when I really fell in love with United.”

For Cleverley however he really is in a cross roads with his career. He turns 25 this summer and he needs to begin performing on a regular basis - as his age is no longer an excuse.

For example - guess how old Scholes was when he struck in that volley?

That’s right, 25.

And Cleverley hasn’t done anything quite like this yet…
