All the latest news including Hazard criticism, transfer window activity, Manchester United target leaves Blues free-run at Atletico Madrid star and more.
The Chelsea news stories that have most dominated the media have been ones that may have direct impact on the upcoming transfer market.
"The only thing I can say is that the market is closed," said Jose Mourinho, as quoted by the club's official website earlier today, Friday. He added: "It opens in the summer; Chelsea will be quiet and calm in that period, we are not going to be the noisy team buying and selling, we won't be that kind of club."
Earlier in the same media address, the Portuguese spoke of how the season was not a bad one for Chelsea, countering defender David Luiz's x-rated assertion that the campaign had been "s**t" for the Stamford Bridge side following their failure to progress to the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the semifinal.
Mourinho was adamant that it was not a bad season as, instead, it was a transitional one. This fact had not been lost on football writers throughout the year, with many speculating as to whom the club would buy to fill the problem areas - striker and left back, mostly.
"We are going to make a couple of critical signings," Mourinho continued. "Is a striker a target for us? Yes, we would never deny that. Is Diego [Costa] a good player? He is, but he's an Atletico Madrid player, so I can't say much."
You do not have to say much, Jose, but what you have may have revealed your hand.
However, it may matter not as the club could have a free run at Costa. Any link to Arsenal for the Brazil-born Spaniard appears to have cooled since the winter window, while Manchester United are apparently ready to offer Paris Saint Germain striker Edinson Cavani whatever he demands in order to land the Uruguayan ahead of the next season.
There could be quite a clear-out of players at Chelsea in the space of a single calendar year as, following on from the transfer of Juan Mata, any one - or even two, or all - of Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Samuel Eto'o. Considering one of the reasons Mourinho was not upset over the loss of Mata was because he wanted Juan to fulfill his share of defensive work, the Blues may well end up without Eden Hazard, also, as the Belgium appears to be infuriating the 'Happy One' for the same reason.
"Eden is the kind of player that is not so mentally ready to look back to his left-back and to leave his life for him. If you see the first goal of Atletico you completely understand where the mistake was and why we conceded that goal. The perfect team at the top level cannot make these kinds of mistakes. I'm not happy. I speak all season and I try to improve him all season."
Paris Saint Germain have long been interested in the player and Chelsea could receive a club record fee for the attacker.
And finally, here is a photo of Ashley Cole finding Branislav Ivanovic's arm hilarious.
