Barcelona star reportedly picks PSG over Manchester City

Dani Alves

Reports in France and Spain are suggesting that Barcelona defender Dani Alves has agreed to sign for Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

High on top of Paris Saint-Germain’s agenda this summer was to bring in an experience right-back. Plenty of names had been mentioned, including Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic and Manchester City’s Pablo Zabaleta. Now it seems that the Parisian club have stolen a march on last year’s Premier League champions and agreed a deal to bring Dani Alves to the French capital according to Spanish site El Mundo Deportivo as reported in L’Equipe.

Dani Alves le ha confesado a sus amigos y compatriotas del PSG (Alex, T.Silva, Marquinhos y L.Moura) que el año próximo serán compañeros.

The story being reported is that Dani Alves has revealed to his close friends plus the Brazilian members of Paris Saint-Germain, that they will be team-mates next season. The French club usually wouldn’t be able to sign another non-EU player but the Barcelona defender has received his Spanish citizenship, so there wouldn’t be any complications with his move.

With his contract running down in the summer of 2015, the 30-year-old would join the Ligue 1 champions after the World Cup, set to play beside his captain and team-mate Thiago Silva.

PSG are interested in bringing in another right-back to add competition for Dutch defender, Gregory van der Wiel, and Alves, at his age won’t demand to start every game. What he does bring to the defence is international and Champions League experience and adds another dimension to the PSG attack, while not exactly strengthening the defence.

The addition of Alves could also point towards PSG and Laurent Blanc moving to playing 4-4-2 next season, with a narrow midfield, the width would come from the full-backs, and there are not many better than Alves in providing width from the right-back position.

Manchester City had been linked with a £15 million summer move for Dani Alves only this week and if the story coming out of France and Spain is true, then PSG will have stolen the march on Manuel Pellegrini’s summer plans.

Alves may not be the best defender, but he is such a dynamic and dangerous player that he would be a great addition to any team this summer. With the suspension of Barcelona’s transfer ban, the Catalan club will be once again willing to sell one or two players. It looks like Dani Alves will be one of the first out the door.
