Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague claims Manchester United's owners want Louis van Gaal, but are biding their time.
Manchester United and Louis van Gaal have found themselves sharing plenty of headlines in recent days, but the latest claim suggests the club’s owners want the Dutchman, but are prepared to make him wait.
Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague told Talk Sport on Wednesday that the Glazers are playing the waiting game, and that the names of some other managers have been leaked by the club.
It is a bold statement, and one that is unsubstantiated, but Balague said, “The Glazers want van Gaal, that’s clear. They are willing to wait though, just so van Gaal doesn’t believe he’s already got the job.
“It also gives them the chance to interview other people and explore other possibilities. (Carlo) Ancelotti is happy to be at Real Madrid, he will stay there.
“Man United are leaking two or three other names so that van Gaal knows he can’t get everything he wants.”
There is absolutely no proof to suggest that is the case. But the Real manager has certainly been linked with the vacant post at Old Trafford, as would be expected for a coach of such experience.
But if Manchester United are so keen to employ van Gaal, it begs the question, why don’t they just do it.
Playing a game makes little sense at this stage, with the Holland boss available after the World Cup and United in desperate need of a quality coach to put right what went wrong at the club under David Moyes.
They are interesting words from Balague, but if the Glazers want van Gaal, the wisest thing to do would be to simply offer him the job.
