Man United have recently been linked with a truly surprising striker swap deal that would see Dutch forward Robin Van Persie moving to AC Milan and former Man City man Mario Balotelli moving to Old Trafford, if reports by the Express are to be believed.
Milan have grown tired of Balotelli's antics in recent weeks and are prepared to sell him in the summer. His return to Italy has been tarnished by off field issues and on-field spats.
Reports in Italy suggest Clarence Seedorf has put former international teammate van Persie at the top of his list of summer targets and he is optimistic that offering the troublesome Balotelli, in an exchange deal, could prove better value for United than any potential transfer fee for the 30-year-old.
Van Persie is a good friend of current San Siro boss Clarence Seedorf, but he is also known to have a good relationship with Dutch national team coach Louis van Gaal, who is hotly tipped to take over at Man United.
It would just be a case of evaluating Mario Balotelli’s suitability to Manchester United, a question that most of the Old Trafford faithful would answer in a heartbeat. The 23-year-old has undoubted quality but he comes with plenty of baggage – he is renowned for the controversy that follows him from club to club.
Balotelli spent two and a half seasons at Manchester City, during which time he recorded 30 goals in 80 appearances, of which 31 were from the bench - by no means a bad scoring record for a fringe player – and since his return to Milan - whilst playing for AC - he’s clocked 40 league appearances, scoring on 16 occasions.
At just 23-years of age he is already a Champions League and four-time Serie A winner. He also has a Premier League, a European Championship runner-up medal and various domestic cups to his name. Balotelli is a class act and he still has a long, long way to go in terms of development.
Providing they can control the Italian, United would be getting the better deal from this reported transfer, yet it still seems an unlikely occurrence. I wouldn’t expect to see Balotelli in a Manchester United shirt anytime in the near future.
