"They scored when they needed to score," Chelsea defender David Luiz remarked, as recently quoted by Sky Sports, of Atletico Madrid following the Stamford Bridge side's loss in (and exit from) the Champions League.
"We controlled the game for the first 40 minutes and then we conceded a goal at the end of the first-half and they were able to counter attack and they dictated the game. In the second half, they scored the second goal and then we headed the ball against the post. If it is 2-2, it is a different game and we are back in it but then they scored the third goal and that is it."
Luiz has perpetually been linked with a West London exit. With Jose Mourinho unable to accommodate the Brazilian at his preferred centre back position due to the exquisite partnership of Gary Cahill and John Terry, Luiz has been deployed in a defensive midfield role. It is to his credit and overall quality that he has excelled regardless of the role he has been asked to fill.
The player has been mooted as a target for Spanish clubs with both Barcelona and, incidentally, Atletico, supposedly interested.
Should Luiz transfer to the Vicente Calderon, it may be as part of a swap deal that could see Diego Costa arrive at Cobham and these latest quotes from the player himself will no doubt reignite the transfer rumours as he gives a glowing appraisal.
"They have a a fantastic philosophy and a very good team."
He concluded: "We gave it our best but it was not enough; that is football."
