Chelsea fans were given a chance to watch goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois play for the first time at Stamford Bridge.
Based on his performance, it won’t be the last time.
The young Belgian has developed into one of the best goalkeepers in the world during a three-year loan spell with Atletico Madrid and he pulled off a world class save last night as the Spanish side put Chelsea out of the Champions League.
Jose Mourinho and Roman Abramovich have a big problem over what to do with the youngster.
He is a cast iron option to come in and replace the experienced Petr Cech as the Blues’ number one but he’s made it clear he’s not going back to London unless he holds that number one slot.
Cech is only 31-years-old and won’t be retiring any time soon, which puts Chelsea in a difficult position as he’s unlikely to call time on his playing career for at least another five years.
The latest reports on Courtois’ future suggest that Chelsea will try and get him tied down on a new long term contract before loaning him back to Atletico for another season.
Courtois’ quality and the consistency he promises over the next 10-15 years is what will probably see the club force Cech out, eventually bring the Belgian back to the club.
Courtois is Belgium’s number one and the pressure on Chelsea officials to get him back to the club is only going to increase if he’s one of the standout goalkeepers at the World Cup in Brazil this summer.
He seems remarkably composed and experience for someone who is still a very young man at 21-years-old and he will force the club into making a difficult decision over the next couple of seasons.
Here’s what Chelsea fans made of his performance last night.
