In an interview with Marseille's website, goalkeeper Steve Mandanda would only leave the club if the move interested him.
French international goalkeeper, Steve Mandanda, has been linked with a move away from Ligue 1 side Marseille this summer, with teams such as AS Monaco and Arsenal reportedly interested in the 29-year-old. With Marseille set to name a new head coach in the coming weeks, it’s unclear whether Mandanda will have a future at the club. While speaking to the official Marseille website it was clear he is not in a rush to leave Le Championnat at the moment, unless he finds a move very interesting.
"In my mind, I feel very comfortable here, I have been here for a while now, I am captain, and I'm attached to the place. New challenges are always interesting but to take me from Marseille it would have to be something really interesting because I feel very comfortable here."
With a number of teams showing interest in Mandanda, Marseille have already been looking for a replacement and it seems AC Ajaccio’s Mexican goalkeeper, Guillermo Ochoa, is atop of OM’s shortlist.
Although his form has not been at the same level as previous years, it hasn’t stopped the France #2 being nominated as one of Ligue 1’s best goalkeepers of the season. Even some Marseille fans have deemed him not worthy of the award, but the ‘keeper will take some solace from being one of the nominees.
Steve Mandanda nominated for Ligue 1 goalkeeper of the year. He's been so poor at times haha.— Mohammed Ali (@mohammedali_93) May 1, 2014
Arsenal have been one of the sides linked and Mandanda could be the ideal player to come in and add experience to the Gunners back-line. Both Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski have failed to fully command the position and Arsene Wenger may look to bring in a ‘keeper that has a few more years on him.
Mandanda has been part of various tournament squads for France and has played multiple times in the Champions League and over 200 games in France’s Ligue 1.
Known for his shot-stopping ability and his agility in and around the box, it may be that a move to England is what Mandanda needs to shake off the indifferent form that has plagued him lately.
Mandanda is looking for an interesting move, Arsenal may be after a goalkeeper, this is a move that would definitely make sense for both parties.
