So far Chelsea have only received 26 goals in 36 league matches and therefore have the best defence in the Premier League. Atletico Madrid have only conceded 23 goals in 35 matches in La Liga and is also the best team in Spain in this category. Anybody who thinks that a match between these two teams could bring a lot of goals, probably still believes in Santa Claus.
Chelsea showed in the first leg one week ago, and in the match against Liverpool on Sunday, how unattractive and at the same time successful their football can be. Mourinho was never famous for letting his teams play an attacking style, but the last two matches proved this image even more. However, it works - as Chelsea did not concede in either game.
Atletico Madrid and their Argentinian coach Coach Diego Simeone have the same reputation. Last weekend they also won the predecisive match in the Spanish title race with their typical result of 1-0 in Valencia.
It will be very interesting to see how difficult it will be for Chelsea to play against their Spanish copy. The result of the first leg – of course 0-0 – leaves both teams in with a chance to qualify for the final. Chelsea‘s advantage is that they’re going to play at home at Stamford Bridge, but after Cech’s injury from last week (although he did train yesterday) Atletico are now supposed to have the better goalkeeper. Apart from that an away goal for them would mean that Chelsea would have to score two goals to eliminate them. However, scoring two goals against Athletico Madrid this season is almost an impossible task.
The fact that Real Madrid are going to be the opponent in the final will provide both teams with some extra motivation. By beating Real, Chelsea‘s coach Mourinho could take revenge for his acrimonious departure from The Bernabeu last summer. Atletico on the other hand would probably also enjoy it, especially if they could prevent their city rival’s tenth victory in the Champions League.
Even if we can’t expect a lot of goals, the duel between the two tactic geniuses Mourinho and Simeone will definitely be a highlight for all fans of hard-line defensive football.
