The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (TVoEC) is a "weird fiction" or natural horror with elements of psychological thriller. It also sits comfortably in the adventure genre.
Detective Paul Prospero has a rather unique gift which allows him to re-create visual constructs of the last moments of murder scenes in his mind. The detective must use his ability to track down the location of a young boy who vanished in the midst of a brutal murder, after receiving a latter from the boy explaining that he is in terrible danger. Paul has to work against time, as the boy's life rests in his hands.
Without weapons, this game is purely focused on exploration and identification, crime scenes and the environment play a vital role. Not just in terms of the plot and gameplay however. The game contains an unusual mixture of natural beauty and natural horror creating a spectacular atmosphere. Red Creek Valley has a contrasting, eerie and unsettling mood which creates a completely unique horror experience.
