When Xabi Alonso launched into a challenge against Bayern Munich last night, the former Liverpool man was confronted with his worst nightmare. As the referee pulled out a yellow card to rightfully book the Spaniard, the realisation that he was going to miss the Champions League final set in.
Serves him right some will say but Alonso did well to pick himself up, re-focus and ensure that Real Madrid saw out a difficult match at the Allianz Arena, thrashing the German side 5-0 over two legs.
Alonso’s experience and ability to control the game in the middle was on full display as he soaked up pressure before creating waves of counter attacks. His skill and consistency is something which gets him linked with moves back to Liverpool on a regular basis.
However, it’s not all bad news for Los Blancos fans as German Sami Khedira is likely to return from injury earlier than expected, which means Carlo Ancelotti has a natural replacement to select.
