On this day: Januzaj tipped by Sir Alex and wonderkid linked with Chelsea

Januzaj And United Celebrate

On the 30th April 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 30th April 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 30th April 2013…

Adnan’s the man

Sir Alex Ferguson first tipped Belgian starlet Adnan Januzaj for future success.

He was talking about the club’s chances in the transfer market against the likes of big-spending Chelsea and Manchester City - and how important the youth system would be in combating the problems they face financially:

“These younger players are the foundation for the next five or six years, irrespective of the players breaking through, like Adnan Januzaj, the Belgian boy, who's really looking very good. Hopefully the players we bring into the club in the next year or so will be of the quality we need. We're competitive in the market - we're not Chelsea or Manchester City in terms of money but we're competitive.”

Januzaj has probably been the only true success of David Moyes’ reign at Old Trafford - and looks set to go to the World Cup with Belgium this summer.

Lazar’s a marked man

Chelsea had reportedly tied up a deal for Lazar Markovic of Partizan Belgrade. The talented playmaker had been on their radar for a while but Chelsea looked like beating everyone to his signature.

In fact a couple of weeks later it was reported a deal was done.

Obviously not - as he penned a five-year deal at Benfica in the summer.

Chelsea remain interested.

Pearce-ing eyes

Liverpool were linked with a surprise move for Reading defender Alex Pearce.

Brendan Rodgers worked with the player at the Berkshire club - and he even gave him the captaincy during his time in charge at the Madejski Stadium.

With his contract expiring he was a cheap and promising option for the boss.

But no deal ever came about - and Pearce is now hoping to help fire The Royals into the Premier League via the playoffs.
