Tottenham latest: Townsend out of World Cup, two ex-players back Sherwood

A selection of the latest stories involving Tottenham Hotspur this Wednesday evening

Winger Andros Townsend is to be sidelined for up to ten weeks, meaning he won’t be part of the England squad that travels to the World Cup in Brazil this summer.

A statement on the Tottenham website said that he is to undergo surgery on his left ankle after damaging ligaments in the 1-0 win against Stoke City at the weekend.

Former Tottenham star David Ginola has said that the club needs consistency, and doesn’t need to replace Head Coach Tim Sherwood with Ajax boss Frank De Boer.

Spurs have been linked strongly with De Boer, with claims that the club had approached the Dutchman to take the job at White Hart Lane this season, something which the club has strenuously denied in a statement, adding that they felt it was ‘important to clarify matters’.

Ginola told TalkSport: “Tottenham must be more patient and not panic if the results don’t come straight away. They need to look at the next three to five years. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

“Tim Sherwood has been at the club for some time. He has worked at the academy, took over from Andre Villas-Boas and had some great results.

“It wasn’t perfect because, if it had been, they would be in the top four.”

Former goalkeeper Ray Clemence says that Sherwood should be afforded another season to prove himself in the job, and compared the job he has done so far to that of Arsene Wenger at Arsenal and Roberto Martinez at Everton this season.

He’s quoted by Sky Sports, saying: “All of us that have been involved want to see as many English coaches and managers being involved at top clubs. There is an obsession at the moment that foreign is better.”

TalkSport has picked up on a report on the Brazilian news site Lancenet linking midfielder Paulinho with a move to Chelsea.

The report states that agent Giuliano Bertolucci, who is also the agent of David Luiz and Oscar, would play a key part in any move across London.
