Time appears to be up for Tim Sherwood at Tottenham, with Frank de Boer has confirming that the North London outfit have made an approach for him.
The initial comments from the retired defender seem positive, with the successful coach seemingly keen to explore the opportunity of a move to White Hart Lane.
During his time at Ajax De Boer has won four consecutive Eredivisie titles despite repeatedly being forced into selling his best players, in a credit to his management ability.
However, despite his reputation and track record of success, another key reason for Spurs to appoint the Dutchman exists.
De Boer has strong relationships with both Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen from their time at the Amsterdam club, and getting the best out of this pair could well be the boost that Spurs need to challenge for the top four next term.
Vertonghen has shown during his time in England that when fit and on form he is one of the best central defenders in the Premier League. However, being forced to play out of position at left-back and being mismanaged has led to rumblings that the Belgian is considering his future at the club.
De Boer’s appointment would surely be the motivation for Vertonghen to stay at Spurs, with the new manager able to build a team around the classy defender that he knows so well.
Despite this term being a disappointment for Tottenham, one bright spark has been the performances of Eriksen.
The Danish playmaker has been in red-hot form in the second half of the season, scoring goals, laying on assists and showing superb vision.
The best position for Eriksen in the Spurs team and the ideal formation to get the best out of him is open for debate, but De Boer would surely be the man to help the Scandinavian improve further next season.
Although there is no guarantee that De Boer will be on the White Hart Lane bench next term, Spurs fans should be excited about his potential appointment and the benefits that it could bring.
