Pepe Reina and Thibaut Courtois have a few things in common at the moment beyond their shared position between the sticks.
Both men are owned by giants of English football, but are currently plying their trade away from home-base on loan overseas.
And each of their immediate futures are not clear in the slightest, despite being held in high esteem by the clubs they turn out for on a weekly basis.
Reina saw himself supplanted at Anfield with the purchase of Simon Mignolet, and opted to join Rafael Benitez’s Napoli - but has admitted he won’t be staying in Italy permanently.
Meanwhile, Courtois is in his third straight year on loan at Atletico Madrid and despite conquering all in his path, still has Petr Cech blocking standing in his way at Stamford Bridge.
Neither man knows where he will be playing his football next season, though recent reports have suggested their futures could actually be intertwined.
Reina has been tipped to take over the no. 1 shirt at Atletico should Courtois not be at the Vicente Calderon next term.
This even though it has been said that Chelsea’s ultimate goal is to lock the Belgian down to a new contract and loan him to Los Colchoneros for one more season.
And Reina has now suggested that the latter scenario is the only one possible, saying he won’t be taking over for Courtois at Atletico - because he thinks his counterpart will still be there.
He responded when quizzed by Cadena Ser on the topic: “A transfer to Atletico Madrid for me?
“No, there is Courtois, who I believe will remain for next season.”
