For someone who has never played for Chelsea, Thibaut Courtois is a very good player. And yet he has become one of the world’s best goalkeepers while on a prolonged loan stay at Spanish side Atletico Madrid.
Reports about the Belgian stopper’s future have been widespread, with some hinting that Chelsea will offer him a new contract only to end him back on loan for a fourth straight campaign, and others claiming the time is close when Courtois will usurp Petr Cech as Jose Mourinho’s number one.
And now fresh reports have made the latter theory a little more likely, with Talk Sport reporting an exclusive that Atletico are monitoring Newcastle United ‘keeper Tim Krul with an eye on a summer move.
The report claims the La Liga side’s sporting director, Jose Luis Caminero, was in attendance for the Magpies Premier League match against Arsenal on Monday evening, with the purpose of watching Krul in action.
The report also suggests Diego Simeone’s club is now considering a £10million offer this summer.
If Krul were to head to this season’s surprise package, that would surely be the end of the road for Courtois’ Madrid adventure.
Of course for now it remains purely speculation, but if Atletico really are looking elsewhere for a new goalkeeper, it will surely only be in preparation for a departure they perhaps hoped would never come.
And the biggest question if Courtois does return to Chelsea this summer could be, what next for Cech?
