Since David Moyes’ departure from Manchester United, the almost daily rumours linking them with a move for William Carvalho have been conspicuous by their absence.
In contrast, we have seen claims that the likes of Real Madrid, Juventus and Chelsea are all interested – with varying degrees of credibility – and now Inter Milan can be added to that list.
Portuguese newspaper A Bola have picked up on reports from Italy that claim the Serie A side are not only monitoring the Sporting Lisbon midfielder, but that he is one of their “dream” signings.
Anyone who has seen William play this season will know that is a dream shared by many. He has excelled for the Primeira Liga side, putting in a string of outstanding performances in defensive midfield.
At just 22, and with a reported €45million release-clause, the Portuguese international is already hot property, and United fans should worry that Moyes’ departure may pull the plug on a deal that many felt was in the bag.
Indeed, reports earlier this month claimed a deal was agreed and that William would be heading to Old Trafford after the World Cup. But whether those claims were true or otherwise, it may not bode well for United given that their considerable scouting of the player came under the stewardship of a manager no longer in charge.
Perhaps it is all the better for United that they are not being mentioned. After all, they are a club who like to do the majority of their transfer business in secret – as much as anyone can these days. But with each new club said to have joined the race for William, it leaves all the more set to be left disappointed.
United should hope they are not one of them.
