During Barcelona's match against Villareal at the weekend, a banana was thrown onto the pitch as Dani Alves prepared to take a corner.
It was yet another example of the racism and ignorance that still exists among a minority of supporters, but the Brazilian full-back found a novel and admirable way of dealing with it.
Stepping forward he picked it up, peeled it and took a bite - an action that has prompted widespread support from his teammates and many more within the game.
But Barca player Neymar has gone one step further, beginning a campaign to fight racism under the motto "We are all equal, we are all monkeys, say no to racism".
Posting a picture of himself eating a banana on his official Instagram account, Neymar was making a huge statement of intent, that there is no place in the sport - or anywhere in the world for that matter - for such ignorance.
It was a bold move from the Brazilian superstar, but it was also the right one. We should all support his cause and hope that ultimately we can rid the game of the racism that still permeates.
We may all be different, but we are all equal.
