United morning news: Two rivals for £50m pair; van Gaal wants Giggs to assist him

Luke Shaw and Southampton players

A select round-up of morning news relating to Manchester United

The Sunday Telegraph reports that Manchester United will set their new manager the target of winning the Premier League title in his first year in charge.

At the moment, that man is expected to be Louis van Gaal, but until the current Holland boss is confirmed the speculation will continue.

The report adds that van Gaal has agreed to take over at Old Trafford but has not yet signed a deal.

That is something the Mail on Sunday echoes, with claims the Dutchman believes he has a verbal agreement with the United hierarchy.

The paper also claims van Gaal will ask Ryan Giggs to be one of his assistants and will also find roles for other members of the Class of 92, including Nicky Butt, Phil Neville and Paul Scholes.

But there could be worse news for United in their apparent pursuit of Southampton left-back Luke Shaw.

The England international was tipped to join for £30million this summer, with David Moyes believed to have laid the groundwork for the move prior to his departure.

But the Express claims that the uncertainty over the next boss could see either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur swoop.

The two clubs have also now been linked with another apparent United target – Adam Lallana. But with the likes of Toni Kroos and Kevin Strootman linked with the outgoing champions, it remains to be seen if the Saints captain is the kind of midfielder any incoming United boss will be keen to recruit.
