Since making his headline-making £37million move from Chelsea, Juan Mata’s Manchester United adventure has seen more lows than highs – especially at Old Trafford.
Ryan Giggs’ debut as interim Man United boss, however, gave the Spaniard and the fans the opportunity to momentarily forget the club’s disappointing Premier League campaign and enjoy the Welshman’s proud day with style.
The Red Devils were relentless throughout, breaking the shackles from David Moyes’ more conservative approach, and the biggest surprise of the afternoon was the hosts having to wait until the 40th minute to find the breakthrough.
Despite spending the first 60 minutes on the bench, Juan Mata still had enough time to add gloss to the victory by coming on for the wasteful Danny Welbeck and firing a quick double.
The Spanish international once again profited from playing off the striker rather than on the wing, and his contribution from his favoured role was telling. Aside from his goals, he played three key passes, had three shots on target and held a team-high 96% pass completion rate.
After the match, Mata dedicated the victory to the patient United supporters and left a simple message on Instagram: ‘The fans at Old Trafford deserved a day like this. Let’s keep going.’
