Arsenal fans react to Everton loss on Twitter

Arsenal have taken another giant step in the race to claim the fourth Champions League spot, after Southampton defeated Everton 2-0 at St Mary’s stadium.

The race for fourth spot in the Premier League, of course, has been intriguing over the past month. Everton had gone on a fabulous run in recent weeks, winning seven straight games - including a 3-0 mauling of Arsenal at Goodison Park, before succumbing to a shock 3-2 home loss to Crystal Palace a few days back.

The Toffees quickly returned to winning ways with a comfortable 2-0 win against Manchester United on Sunday (a result that spelled the end for David Moyes at Old Trafford), and kept up the pressure on the Gunners for that all-important fourth spot.

Arsenal, in contrast, had wobbled after excellent early / mid-season form, and fans were left fearing the worst when Everton looked to be more than serious contenders for fourth slot.

Fortunately for Arsenal, two wins in quick succession put the pressure back on Everton, who then lost in the early game on Saturday at Southampton - their second defeat in three games. An Arsenal win against Newcastle at the Emirates on Monday, then, will open up a four point gap and all but seal a top four spot for next season.

Following on from Everton’s south coast nightmare, a number of Arsenal supporters took to Twitter to celebrate their good fortune:
