Liverpool fans react to Gerrard performance: 'He has spent the whole game trying to make up for his error'

Liverpool lost 2-0 to Chelsea on Sunday to ensure their title hopes took a huge dent, but what did fans makes of captain Steven Gerrard's performance?

Following Liverpool's victory against Manchester City, Steven Gerrard brought his teammates together into a huddle and gave a speech that - to anyone watching - suggested his long wait for a Premier League winners medal was coming to an end.

The passion on his face, the emotion at the final whistle, and the way he and his fellow Liverpool players had been performing for much of the campaign all suggested the title could finally be heading to Anfield.

But following their 2-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea on Sunday afternoon, it could now go to any one of three sides on what could be the most exciting final day in English top-flight history.

For all Gerrard's outstanding performances this season, it could be remembered for the moment he slipped and allowed Demba Ba to score the opening goal for Jose Mourinho's side.  But what was the England international's overall showing like?

According to the Opta stats below, it was far from the appalling performance some rival fans were talking of on social media both during and after the match.

Gerrard had nine scoring attempts in total, four of which were on target.  He also made 114 passes, 96 of which found a teammate.  He also played two key passes to set up goal-scoring chances for others.

Yes, Gerrard may have failed to score from nine chances, but of Liverpool's eight shots on target Gerrard contributed half of them.  He also continued to ping the ball around as the Reds enjoyed a huge percentage of possession.

However, it could equally be argued that with 73% percent of the ball, Gerrard et al should have done considerably more with it.

But what did the Liverpool faithful think of their skipper's performance? We took to Twitter to see and below is a selection of what we found:
