After a somewhat disappointing season Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to reinforce over the summer. Here are five players they may target.
It has been a turbulent season at White Hart Lane. With Tim Sherwood at the reigns, the days of Andre Villas Boas are long forgotten. But disappointment in both domestic and continental competitions will be fresh in the supporters’ memories.
After losing Gareth Bale last summer the club pushed on in the transfer market, bringing in no less than seven new players – an investment of £105million. However these players have largely failed to impress, with the exception of Christian Eriksen.
Spurs must be more prudent in the upcoming window, as this period could be crucial to the club’s long-term prospects. Next season the fans will be pushing for a genuine top four challenge and, with a few clever additions, this target could be well within their reach.
Here are five potential summer targets:
Spurs will be determined to sign another striker and unsettled Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck could be the perfect target.
While the 23-year-old has been a fairly regular starter for United this season, his opportunities of playing in his preferred central striker role have been limited. He could be seen as expendable during the summer months.
Tottenham are thought to hold a long-standing interest in the Cagliari centre-back Davide Astori and the Italian outfit are seemingly resigned to losing him after fighting off interest for the past two years.
Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul is said to be giving serious thought to his future at St James’ Park after the club’s disappointing season.
The highly-rated Netherlands international is keen to play European Football next season and, with Tottenham in the running for Europa League qualification, White Hart Lane could be the perfect destination.
Danny Rose needs competition at left-back and Loris Benito could be the man to provide this. The Swiss under-21 international, who can either play in defence or midfield, is rumoured to be available for around £3million.
Nacer Chadli has scored just one goal in 24 Premier League appearances this season as he has mostly failed to live up to expectations, therefore Spurs will be looking to strengthen their options on the left wing.
If rumours are to believed, Spurs scouts have been keeping a close eye on highly-rated Salzburg winger Saido Maine in recent months. The 22-year-old has netted 13 goals in 32 appearances this season.
