Manchester United have been linked with a whole host of midfielders in recent months, with William Carvalho, Toni Kroos, Cesc Fabregas joined in the gossip columns by Southampton’s Adam Lallana.
The 25-year-old England international is enjoying an outstanding campaign, and while he may not be the star-name many United fans are no doubt seeking, the reports of a summer move refuse to go away.
The Daily Mail claimed last week that United were pressing ahead with a £30million move for Saints left-back Luke Shaw despite David Moyes departure, and that they would also offer £25million for Lallana.
That fee is said to include a bonus payment to the midfielder’s former club Bournemouth, but given the fees bandied about for some of the other midfielders currently excelling in Europe, would it be wise?
He would certainly be an improvement on United’s current midfield options, but perhaps not enough to warrant such a significant outlay. But either way, Lallana has been speaking about the reported interest and what his future may bring.
In quotes published by the Express following an interview with BT Sport, he said, “I just want to enjoy my football. That’s when I’m at my happiest, when I’m playing well.
“I just want to concentrate on the last two games of the season and we’ll sit down in the summer and see what happens.”
With a contract until 2018, there is no reason for the Saints to allow Lallana to leave just yet. After all, they are sure to be reluctant to do so given his talent and impact on the team. But if that big offer did come in, could it be too good to refuse, for both the south coast club and one of their brightest stars.
